Evaluation - Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
ΓΌ
We composed a regional magazine as our main task and then supporting this for advertisement decided to produce a billboard as one of our ancillary tasks and a website too for our other ancillary task. Underground, our regional magazine had a unique selling point of having a sub-genre – for Lucy’s this was of fashion and for Teddy’s it was a what’s on guide feature, which allowed the opening of the target demographic to be much broader than the task of the basic genre of regional. We focused our product around London due to being the busiest city within England and having various main attractions – we wanted to focus on the fact that London is a tourist attraction therefore, the different cultures within it. By doing this, again it opens the demographic further and we hope it gains popularity for our magazine. Our ancillary tasks support our main product completely due to being a support for advertisement also, to maintain the brand for the whole product.

The website supports the product due to advertisement, it is a quick and easy way to reach the magazine without having to leave the home to purchase it. The online encounter allows a snippet of the main story with features that are bonus’ – just for the website version and then allowing features that will only be included in the print version meaning, it keeps every branch of demographic happy. This is because, stereotypically the older generation prefer to purchase the print copy however, the younger generation are more active online. Our main use for the magazine was to open the horizon for the demographic because research told us that the older generation (50+ years) whereas, we wanted for the younger generation to be more engaged therefore our ancillary task of a website helps with this significantly. Also, the branding of the magazine is continued in our websites – both of us used the same layout for the ‘home page’ and this consisted of the same masthead and typography as the main product. The masthead we have used as our brand, due to the connotations of the actual title of the magazine – ‘Underground’ instantly generates the impressions of London due to being the main form of transport and due to our target audience being young commuters then the name fits perfectly. We thought that this was the best fit for our magazine due to it can also, have the second meaning of secrets and gossip kept “under” therefore, adding an exciting feature for the magazine because in Lucy’s issues she interviews a local fashion blogger, which has exclusives just for this product that would intrigue the audience.
In Teddy’s website it has one of the pages on it for a gallery of images that supports his issue of the magazine due to being a visual representation of what his issue includes – for example: the comparing of cultures within London and the images show this in the gallery again, representing the younger age more.
Lucy’s website has a shop as one of the pages on it, meaning that the connection is direct for the main product and the ancillary task because it gives a base of where you can purchase the actual print product. The shop gives you a direct link to the subscription of the magazine so again, the ancillary task of a website is very effective for the combination of tasks.

The billboard is the second ancillary task, which like the websites, help with the advertisement especially for where the magazine is based. In London, you see billboards and posters everywhere therefore, this is extremely effective for showcasing a new product. The brand of the magazine is the focus of “Underground” (like previously mentioning) therefore, the location of the billboards are going to be on train stations and other transport so that the younger generation would be able to see but also, for the older generation to see. The billboard also, follows the conventions of the main task due to the masthead and typography used, a snippet of the front page of each of the issues of the magazine. Both billboards followed the same set up and highlighted the social media that is used for the product, as it was one of our main focuses for the magazine because of the younger generation focus. Each iconic symbol was used on the billboard representing that it can be found within that website therefore, alerting the people using the media text and used an advertising tool.

Overall, the ancillary tasks are extremely effective for the contribution of both sets of products. We wanted them to bounce off another and act as a marketing dispense for the main task – both the website and billboard are branches of advertisement and generating the target demographic but also, maintaining the brand that we have created.

Task 17 - Photo shoot planning for Ancillary Tasks (individually)

We planned for the images we wanted to capture by piecing together different locations we wanted to use and the different types of images and some examples of when we took our images to then gain an idea of what we want to use. Here is the link to our blogs:

Task 15- Ancillary Tasks - Billboard (Final)

We both constructed billboards in order to sell our magazines to the public and due to our target demographic being the commuters in London, a billboard would be the most useful piece of advertisement because the commuters will be able to engage with it on their way to and from school/work. Here are the links to our billboards:
